A therapist just said I have intrusive thoughts without ocd.

Hey,

I’m feeling scared and concerned right now.

6 years ago I was diagnosed with OCD due to the intrusive thoughts I have and the reassurance seeming and rumination I did in response to them.

Nowadays I don’t really reassurance seek that much but I do get sucked into sometimes.

Anyway, today I had an assessment with the IAPT and I explained about the thoughts and gave him some examples of them.

However, at the end he gave me an ocd scale and my score came out low as my only problem areas are to do with the thoughts, not to do with checking or rituals which a lot of the questions were about.

Then he said that I DON’T HAVE OCD.

That was hard to hear as for the last six years I have believed I was an ocd sufferer (as a psychiatrist told me I was) and I relate so much to what other pure o sufferers have been through.

He said that it does sound like intrusive thoughts but linked to anxiety.

I am scared though that if it’s not ocd then the thoughts could be true.

He said the treatment would still be cbt but he needs to speak to his supervisors before they say it they can help me.

I am really scared and confused.

I thought I had Pure O OCD, I relate to other sufferers but now this is really scary.

Also I have just started gestalt therapy and in the last session the therapist was asking about my intrusive thoughts, should I go in detail about them with her or would that be counter-productive?

I am scared right now

I have been googling to try and find out what I do have if it isn’t ocd but I am struggling to find something as all the search results link to ocd

It seems that the therapist is not very educated on OCD and considers it stereotipycally as it is something like compulsive hand-washing. On the other hand, correct me if I'm wrong, he did not say that you were trans. Maybe in his book intrusive thoughts are not called OCD, yet it's all they are: intrusive thoughts. As for opening up to another therapist, I think you can do it. Experience has taught me that they are not going to tell you are trans without hearing your full story. Look after yourself :)

Honestly, FG, it seems like you're going to jump to the worst possible conclusion regardless of what the therapist tells you. That's what you've been doing for years.

I’ve got some good news. They rang me up today and they said they have spoken to a cbt therapist and that they are going to TREAT ME FOR OCD and they have popped me on the waiting list
