So today I went to recycle some used AA batteries, which were in a plastic bag. At the recycling site, I reached down the bag with my hand and noticed that it was full of crystal-like crumbs (potassium hydroxide). One of the batteries must have corroded. After I threw the batteries away, I rubbed the crystals off of my hands and then went to a nearby mall to wash my hands. I did not experience any burning sensation whatsoever and didn't really care much about this.
Later, however, I started having second thoughts. I got scared that the crystals may be toxic, and what if I accidentally got them in my mouth (e.g. if some of the crumbs got under my nails and I would get them in my mouth when eating with my hands). I am now afraid to touch my face or eat, even though I washed my hands many times, took a shower, and clipped my nails. Or what if they got stuck on my clothing or on my furniture and someone from my family accidentally got them in their mouth. Also, the plastic bag was in my backpack, so what if some of the crumbs stayed there and would get onto my hands or the food I will be carrying in the backpack sometime later.
Honestly, everything feels contaminated right now. I feel very anxious about this. Do you think the danger is real or if it's only my OCD running wild once again? Thank you.
