Angry reaction for dealing with OCD?

Postby Lionchaser » Wed Aug 17, 2016 7:03 am

For anyone here that deals or has dealt with OCD, have you ever received an angry reaction someone for dealing with that issue? There was one time when I felt guilty about something and I began voicing my concerns to someone I generally trusted. They got angry at me for being OCD and said something like "I know how you are" and "don't talk to [xyz person] about this!" I think that has made it more difficult to discuss this issue with people.

If you are trying to help someone who has OCD, getting angry at them will NOT help, it just drives the OCD sufferer away from you to other sources. I will add a caveat and say that I DO think it would help in certain circumstances, but that the average person frankly doesn't know how/when to approach that situation in that manner.

Sadly, no one who doesn't have or study this condition will ever really *get it*, and the latter group is debatable. Our loved ones are often the most valuable part of our support network, but no matter how hard they to help or understand try I find that occasional outbursts of anger, confusion, and disappointment are all but inevitable.

It is, of course, absolutely infuriating to be scolded for who you are, but from a pragmatic point of view it brings home the importance of practicing constant clear reminders and communication about what constitutes the experience of being OCD. What seems as simple and obvious as the weather for us is like landing in the land of Oz for them.
Mere "anxiety," as Heidegger says, is at the source of everything.
