Son possibly has OCD?

Postby 08tlgermain » Sun Jul 31, 2016 12:30 am

I have 4 kids ranging from 6 years old to 7 months old. Ever since my 6 year old was an infant he has always been easily frustrated. Even now that he is a bit older, he still has meltdowns all the time. Nothing like his siblings. Most of the time it is because he wants something a certain way. Like today he wanted the curtain closed so bad; it was like he had a fear of it being open or something. He just can't focus on anything else once he focused on a particular thing. He just can't let it go. This happens many times every day. He also, in general, get super frustrated if he has to do anything remotely difficult. School is almost impossible. This is not normal fustration either. He also goes crazy if there is loud noises or something that feels weird to him (like a particular clothing). His pediatrician is in the process of evaluating him. She said that he definitely shows anxiety symptoms just being in her office. Currently she is having us make a journal about anything big or small about him and what sets him off. But we have another month before she she see us next. Anyways, I was just wondering if this sounds like OCD or not. My son is such a bright little boy that we love so much. I just feel like our parenting for him needs to be different than his siblings. I want to help him.

I'm no expert, but I don't know, sweets. That doesn't sound like me and I was a VERY anxious child (and am so now) That almost sounds like something on the autism/neurodiverse spectrum, you ask me.

As a moderator, I very nearly moved this to Significant Others, Friends and Family, or Living With Mental Illness (it's not my job to say what your son is doing, but it is my job to place posts where I think they will receive the most attention), but I decided to go ahead and leave it here. Generally, we discourage ppl from automatically posting in multiple forums, still I think you might wind up feeling a need to give other fora a try. We do ask that people try to keep it down to no more than three forums for an identical question, giving each one a chance first before trying again. This one may need some poking around- hopefully you'll soon get some ideas from his doc on what may be going on.

You might think about looking thru the Autism and Aspergers forums also, to see what they have to say.

And if it seems as if he's overly preoccupied with perfectionism, a look thru OCPD might be enlightening.

Even though I have my doubts about OCD, I would like to see other OCDers to take a gander and weigh in and see what they think about this.

Thanks so much! I'll look into those others that you mentioned and wait to see if anyone else responds before I post on other section. I'm just so worried I'm going to break his spirit before he finally gets diagnosed. Right now I have him on the same rules as my other little ones, but the rules just don't seem to sink into him like the others and he is the oldest. I try and just send him to his bed to take a breather before it gets any worse like my doctor had told us, but that makes it escalate. I just don't want to loose him. He is such a smart and sweet boy! We see his doctor again in a month, but she said it isn't until two months that she would really like to go into it deeper (since we are also trying to figure out why he is constantly sniffing his nose for going on a year). The doctor is hoping it is either allergies or his tonsils or annoids, but she said it could also be a tick he absorbed. Just two days ago he started suddenly speaking in 3rd person also.

Interesting. I would lean towards neurodiverse but again I don't know nothing. I do know a kid with an Asperger Dx and from what I understand he requires meds and daily routine to keep calm, he doesn't like things to be different, he doesn't like change, etc, (neither do I, for that matter, self tests suggest I may fall just within the 'normal' range when it comes to the autistic spectrum.) He's now a teen and is much more like a neurotypical than he once was. I'm sure there's a fix out there whatever is going on with him, just going to have to get an accurate Dx and pin it down to something.

Dear o8tlgermaine:

Your son suffers greatly from anxiety: excess fear that is ongoing. The sniffing you mentioned happens to be my first tic in my Tourette Syndrome history, started about five years old. Tourette and OCD were my first expressions of my anxiety.

Your son needs so much comfort, so much comfort from you, to hush that fear, quiet it down. The expressions of his anxiety require comfort, hold him, hug him... see to it that his life as the least anxiety producing as possible. Make life better for him, easier.

My heart goes out for him because I know anxiety.
