Interesting. Thank you for sharing. I read Mr Watts back in my early 20's.
The idea of silence as a gauge for one's anxiety levels may not be scientific but it seems to be accurate more often than not.
I worked with a guy who couldn't stand silence. I was in computers at the time, and our office was very quiet when we worked on Sundays (which we did occasionally). On Sundays there was no music pumped in over the intercom system. He would get very agitated without something "playing", so finally he brought in a radio from home. He admitted that the silence drove him insane.
I feel sorry for youth culture, who has their head filled with media 24/7.
We often think that TV, computers, tablets, etc are things we relax with - but what pours out of those "screens" actually CREATE anxiety - by the TONAGE.
My home is silent most of the time (as it is now). The good drug.
