I am curious whether this is a form of OCD or not, I will be grateful for any input.
If I happen to think about breathing or blinking it completly ruins my natural rythm for them. This usually causes me mild distress but it can cause me anxiety attacks. I get an overwhelming need to try to regain the rythm, which is impossible because if I am thinking about it, it never feels right. In the end I generally lose focus on it and the rythm sorts itself out.

Breathing is a subconscious act that is controlled by your hypothalamus. Thus, when you switch from subconscious to conscious control it makes sense that your breathing would become different.
I have a feeling that this is an obsession that is simmering slowly - One that you could very well do without. Next time you try to gain control over your breathing just tell yourself that you don't have time to monitor your breathing and get on with your day.
