OCD itching?

Postby theexoticlife95 » Sun Jul 20, 2014 4:41 pm

Hi,
This is my first post of this forum and I wanted to start off by asking a serious question. First let me tell you a little bit about myself. I am a 19 year old male about to begin my second year of college. Im on 60 mg of Prozac and 20 mg of Adderall XR. I also take Omega 3 and Multivitamins. I have been diagnosed with many disorders such as ADHD, OCD, Tourrette's Syndrome, Depression and Social Anxiety Disorder. I also self diagnosed myself with Maladaptive Day Dreaming disorder due to my obsession with day dreaming and fantasizing. I can conceal these problems quite well and my friends could never guess that I have any of these disorders. In fact, I put on a huge mask that only my family can see right through. I realize that these problems result from a chemical imbalance in the brain and I have accepted that, but I still believe that with will power I can overcome most of these problems. However, there is something bugging me and I can't find out what the problem is called or if it is a side effect of another disorder.

This is my issue.
I get these itching sensations all over my body if I sit/stand still. I don't have any skin problems (rashes, bruises, dry skin) or even health problems in that matter :| . I eat very healthy (i get enough protein, carbs, fats, and micronutrients), workout regularly, and get enough sleep. The itchy feelings especially persist if I don't act out on my compulsions, which is why I am asking this question on this sub-forum to see if anyone can relate. The itchy feeling is akin to an itchy feeling you would get when rubbing a feather gently over your skin. I get this everywhere from my feet to my head. If I don't scratch the "itch" it becomes more irritating, itchier, and starts to feel as if a bug is crawling on my skin. This especially sucks with OCD because if I scratch the itch, I have to do it an odd number of times. Is there anything I can do and can someone explain what is happening? This thing is making my life hell! Clearly this can't be a skin problem. It must be some neurological thing.

It sounds like the itching is related to the OCD. Funny you posted this, b/c I've thought a good way to explain OCD to the uninitiated is as an itch that you can't help but scratch. Why do you do a compulsion if you know it's wrong? Well imagine having bad poison ivy with no lotion or medicine... why would you ever scratch? Don't you know you'll just make it worse... Anyway, having physical sensation such as itching can be a result of anxiety. Same as elevated heart rate, dizziness, chills, etc. Doing compulsions temporarily alleviates anxiety, so would lessen these physical effects temporarily. I think if you can get a handle on the OCD, these itching sensations will go way down. JMO
