What I like about having OCD!

Postby EZee » Wed Sep 13, 2006 2:46 am

Everything! It is my personal servant and I use it to make life better.

We have only today, rejoice and be glad in it.

By the way, would you trade your OCD in exchange for cancer, heart disease, or physical disabilities. I sure wouldn't trade mine.

We need more positivity around here!

Life is a mystery to be lived, not a problem to be solved.

Knowledge is learning something every day. Wisdom is letting go of something every day.

What a man takes in by contemplation, he pours out in love. (maybe not the best quote for us ruminators!)

Perfect does not mean perfect actions in a perfect world, but appropriate actions in an imperfect one.

The only thing thats negative is that its boring, somethimes i just want to get to the good part of the day but its like everything takes 8 times as long as it should and im like "got to do it" and at the same time "dont want to do it" and i just think grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

but at other times i feel like im different to other people and my life is ordered and not out of control, and then i feel its all worth it.

hmmmm?!? all very confusing eh?!?

I appreciate your optimism. It's great, really it is. But it is a little insulting just the same. Many people or I should say most really do suffer from their ocd. It's a hard thing to try and embrace. I'm glad for you that you have been able to enjoy it and accept it as part of who you are. But, you must know that when you make a comment like comparing ocd to physical disablities it seems like you are belittling other people problems. There are more severe cases of ocd, when a person can't even function properly. Cancer is a terrible thing, but also very different from ocd. Mental anguish can be just as debilitating. Everybody's problems are just as much of a problem as the next person's. So, thank you, but please keep that in mind.

Thanks for the input. I too suffered with OCD and "allowed" it to be my master instead being the master of it. I know that not everyone has the same trouble with OCD, some of us suffer with it more than others. The point I was hoping to make was that some of us can change our OCD into a positive simply by changing our attitude about it. Over the years I found in my personal experience that for me OCD was somewhat to very disabilitating. The only way that I was able to win control of my OCD was to feed my mind positive and uplifting information. Also, for me it helped to label the repetitive and unwanted thoughts as a lie and eject them from my mind. For example, when I had already locked the back door of my house before going to bed, I would not believe the lie that I needed to go check and make sure. At first this was not an easy thing to do. However, as time passed I was able to conquer those thoughts with that approach, as well saying to myself, I don't care if the door is locked or not. Using this I don't care statement really helped me to move away from this time consuming double and triple checking. Also, I used it to fight the "what if's" that are someimes a big part of OCD. When OCD said what if, I said I don't care! It worked for me and think we should all find what works best for us and use it.
Finally, I mentioned the other health issues in hopes of getting all of us, including myself to accept the fact that compared to many things OCD is not the worst thing that can happen and that nearly everyone has something serious to battle in their lives. As for me, I accept what I have and I am thankful that I have been spared the suffering associated with many other serious illnesses. Of course I do not take OCD lightly, I just wanted to assist in letting some light back in our lives.

To successfully win in any battle, a person must first think they can win, second believe that they can win and finally know and accept the fact that they will win.

Nobody will ever be as hard on us as we are on ourselves, so laugh, forgive and love yourself because you know you deserve it!!!!

aim...I really dont see his optimism as belittling. There is no doubt that all of us are battling against a vicious opponent within our own minds. Thinking positively and quieting our minds through constructive ideas are the only tools we have to foster against this. To believe were suffering with the incurable only makes our battle harder. You have to stay positive regardless of what hand youve been dealt in life be it a mental or physical disorder.

This forum is full of complains and no way out scenarios. I think Ezee is trying legitimatly to provide optimism as well as helpful ideas. I know when I was first starting with my therapist she would provide optimism but stop short of giving me any coping mechanisms to use. This is a place to vent, as well as look for help.

As we all know OCD can rule if we allow it. I have been successful in making it work for me and I wanted to share that with everyone.
I found that listening to positive and motivational recordings aids in the mental healing that is so often needed to fight and win against OCD. I believe we can be the master of it and use it to benefit others as well as ourselves.

I know that everyone here is special and has many gifts to share with society and with positive reinforcement we can bring those things to light. We should believe in ourselves and love ourselves because we are fantastic!!

We do not "need" the approval of others to be valuable!! What we think of ourselves is all that really matters!!!!!!!!

Hi,

I agree with lot of the imputs here. I am happy you feel like there can be something good about ocd but also I think it does make other people frustrated to hear you say that.

Also I do not believe in "likeing" your ocd. Ocd has been compaired to addiction and you can only get rid of it if you reeally want to, and if you dont even do that entirely how can you fight it. Do I make sense? I dont mean that me or other people with ocd does not desperatly want to get rif of this horrible deciese. I mean I am one of you. Just... I dont want to make my illness my personality. You know?

I completely agree with you here.
