Fasting OCD

Postby srzopfi15 » Sat Nov 09, 2013 2:36 am

I am a Christian and I remember hearing from a few different places that fasting was beneficial. However, I felt terrified of doing it and one day a thought popped into my head that I should fast for a week. This scared me even more. Eventually I became afraid of God and thought he would demand that I fast. I began to feel the need to fast at certain times to please God and would feel like I would be punished if I didn't.

One time I fasted for a day though and it didn't feel all that bad and I realized that what I was doing was legalistic and I became less afraid of it. However, I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar fear.

Most religions that do fast and prayer, such as the LDS church, do it for a period of 24 hours or less. They give up all food and drink except for when it is needed for medical purposes.

Fasting for a week would be ill advised medically because it would inevitably result in death unless you cheated somehow or gave up everything except for water, but still would be unhealthy.

If you want to fast for religious reasons, figure out a healthy way to do it which would be no longer than 24 hours at one time, and keep it to maybe less than twice per month.

I meant everything except water, and maybe multivitamins. But I'm less concerned about it now anyway.
