my best friend is in a family of ocd'ers

Postby natagirl » Tue Apr 25, 2006 12:41 pm

I talked to my best friend last night, because I started thinking about how I recognized several ocd traits in her. Being a psychology grad, I knew she would be familiar with the problem, so I asked her if she felt she had it. She looked at me and laughed, mainly because she knew she had the tendencies, and then said it is inherited on her mom's side! I never realized that her mom and sister and brother and uncle all have it. I guess I've always known her family to be neat freaks and that that was somewhat weird, but that was it. Very interesting how ocd'ers are attracted to other ocd'ers. I think I have more friends who are too!

Hmmm, I don't think OCD is a directly inherited disease - Not as far as the basic Mendelian Inheritance goes. It's probably just like Heart-Disease: It is caused by a whole lot of genes that make us more susceptible to HAVING the Heart Disease (or OCD). However, if we look after ourselves we can manage to avoid seriousness of the conditions. Like, things such as eye-colour and hair-colour are directly inherited.

Whoa, I got off the main topic a bit there - Sorry :)

I also have an OCD friend and she had never heard of it before I mentioned it to her. You might be interested to hear that she then told me that her mother is the same as her. Also, my mother has OCD tendencies, but they do not appear to bother her too much.

You also might be interested to hear that ever since the onset of my depression my closest of friends have all had problems. So, we all appear to stick together.

Chucky,
Well you know, I just happened to read a book not long ago by one of my *new* favorite fiction authors, Hannah Alexander. It's a pseudonymn for a husband and wife who have teamed up to write medical fiction stories, with romantic and suspense themes. Just in this past one, the storyline centered around a family who suffered from ocd, and it said in there that it was an inherited problem. I figured it was accurate, as the man behind the writing is an emergency room doctor. Anyway, it's nice to read all these things about ocd.
