Dating someone with OCD

Postby Guest » Sat Apr 01, 2006 6:41 am

My b/f has OCD.(31 Y.O) He keeps thinking about things. Before he started his medicine , he was even thinking at night: he was thinking about work, school, etc. He does not like hugging because hugging interrupts his thinking.
He was diagnosed with OCD. When we argue, he strats thinking that we are going to break up. He works himself up so bad. He becomes rude, yells at me, calls me names, accuses me of weird things, etc., Things get really ugly. Then he cries, apologizes. It happens approximately every 3 weeks.
I am really tired of his OCD. I read about it all the time, I insisted that he went to the counselor, started treatment.
He is improving, but those ugly episodes keep happening, and they hurt me deeply.
I am tired of dealing with it, though God knows my heart goes out for him. I can't just end it because I feel sorry for him, and I have some feelings left for him, and we had some good moments too.
BUT , IS IT WORTH BEING WITH SOMEONE WHO SUFFERES FROM OCD, WHO HAS THOSE AGRESSIVE OUTBREAKS EVERY 3 WEEKS?
ANY ADVICE WILL BE APPRECIATED!

The only advice I have for you is this:

Remember that he doesn't want to be like this. It's not a choice that his mind works the way it does. It hurts him just as bad as it does you that he acts this way.

I hope you try and stick it out.

If he's seeing a counsellor things won't improve. His problem is analysing, thinking constantly. Going to a counsellor and talking about things will likely only encourage this to get worse, encourage him to think/analyse more. He needs to get therapy aimed at dealing with this form of OCD.

Hi Guest,

I don't have (unfortunately) many answers for you. However I am in exactly the same situation as you. My boyfriend has OCD and we go through pretty much the same crisis as you do. I thought it would be nice to talk to somebody in the same situation.

I try to convince my boyfriend to take medication. He is currently in general phsychology treatment, but I would like him to change for cognitive behaviour therepy & meds. He's hesitant. I don't know how much pressure I can / should apply to get him to do it. His OCD is obiously threatening our relation seriously.

Would be nice to talk to you
