Hi guys,

I think I am developing trichotillomania. I have had a bad and anxious year, and my hair pulling has been getting worse (I now feel as though there is a visible impact). I would like to know what advice you would give someone in the early stages? What do you wish you had known? I am going to try to stop now, as I know it will just get harder and harder and ...

Hair Pulling Disorder Tied to Genes?

A new study suggests mutations in a gene called SLITKR1 may play a role in the development of trichotillomania in some families. The mental disorder causes people to compulsively pull their hair out, resulting in noticeable hair losshair loss and bald spots.

Researcher Stephan Züchner, MD, of the Duke Center for Human Genetics, says genetic mutations only account for a small fraction of trichotillomania cases, but the findings may help lead to a better understanding ...

What do you do when you’re publicly confronted?

So I’ve only recently become aware of the term Trichotillomania, and honestly, from this point on, I’ll probably try to educate people who ask about this issue. But I’ve been pulling for around 15 years now, and I’ve been confronted about it before, and I was wondering what everybody else does when somebody in their life publically calls them for their behavior.

All my life, I’ve typically played dumb and made the other person feel ...

Trichotillomania in men vs. women

So I just recently learned that this hair pulling compulsion I've always had (I probably started when I was around 12, I'm now 25) has a name, and it is shared by many people.

On one hand, I'm so happy just to be able to put a name on it, and I feel like I now have an explanation I may be able to use (I mean, it's still shameful and I wouldn't feel right ...

What is a trich therapy session like?

Hello everyone, I'm new here. Been struggling with depression for most of my life but was only diagnosed a little under 14 years ago. I've been in psychotherapy on and off since then, and have been on many, many medications. Currently taking a large cocktail. I went back to therapy about two years ago (the unexpected death from a heart attack of my psychiatrist sent me into a very dark time) and cannot see myself ...

Is this trichotillomania?

Hey! First, I'd like to apologize for my English, I'm not a native speaker, so it isn't perfect, but I still hope it isn't unbearable to read.

I've been suffering from hair pulling for about 3-4 years, and now that I think of it, I may have started it as a kid already. I'm now an 18-year-old girl, so it properly started when I was about 14. The thing is that I don't just pull ...

need some advice

I'm 21 years old and a going to be a senior in college. I have pretty bad anxiety and have since I was about 16. I've always sort of tugged at my eyebrows when reading or bored, but it was never really an issue. Within the last year or so I started actually pulling them, to the point where there are noticeable red spots on my skin, but I don't really leave bald spots, so ...
