After nearly three decades as a member it is with a mixture of pleasure and disappointment that I submit this letter of resignation from the American Psychiatric Association. The major reason for this action is my belief that I am actually resigning from the American Psychopharmacological Association. ...

I have known many victims of coercive psychiatry, that have been forcefully drugged, that have committed suicide while on these drugs. One of the side effects of antipsychotic medication is 'akathisia' the symptoms of akathisia is extreme agitation. A person suffering akathisia is at an increased risk of committing suicide or acts of violence. Also akathisia can exacerbate psychosis.
