"Investigative reporter Robert Whitaker, author of the groundbreaking book Mad In America, is now pursuing a fascinating line of research into how the mammoth psychiatric drug industry is endangering the American public by covering up the untold cases of suffering, anguish and disease caused by the most widely prescribed antidepressants and antipsychotic medications.

Hey I love this part of the forum..

I am so anti-psych these days, but I like reading about stuff. I am wondering what it is called when I suddenly "wake up to reality".
It feels as if though my mind and body hasnt been connected in a few weeks/months, and then I realise that I AM ME, and that scares me and makes me feel really wierdo. Then it kinda fades away until the next "wake up". Its totally wierd, but I ...

Culture Specific Mental Disorders

Culture Specific Mental Disorders

"Apparently, mental illness is present in all societies. However, the frequencies of different types of mental illness vary as do the social connotations. What is defined as a mild form of mental illness in one culture may be defined as normal behavior in another. For instance, people in western societies who regularly carry on animated conversations with dead relatives or other supernatural beings are generally considered mentally ill. The same behavior ...

Risk taking and mental health

I heard an interesting programme yesterday on BBC Radio 5 about risk taking.
One of the main contributors, Professor Heinz Wolff, suggested that we (humans) need to take and experience regular risks to maintain our mental health.
It was also suggested that one of the reasons for the rise in childhood and teenage psychiatric problems is that children are no longer allowed to take risks. It was argued that because of parental anxieties, schools fearing ...

West suffers more from mental illness.

West suffers more from mental illness

People in the West suffer more from mental illness than those in poorer countries, with chances of recovery being higher in places like India than in say New York or London, says an Australian study.

Prominent Psychiatrist thanks Tom Cruise

Dr Peter Breggin thanks Tom Cruise.

On June 25, July 2005 Tom Cruise did the unthinkable on TV. Actually, he did several “unthinkables” in a filmed interview with NBC’s Matt Lauer for the Today Show.

First, Tom stopped smiling. He deprived us of that multi-million dollar grin and got serious. For a star to do this to the American public was unthinkable.

Second, Tom pointed out that Matt Lauer actually was very “glib” (shallow) and ...

A great psychiatric survivor story ...

I've written a novel called Record Producer from Dimension X. I'm posting it for free on my website. It's a satire of the music business. It's about a female metal band that poses as a crappy pop group in order to get a record deal. They become famous and cause worldwide chaos.

During a blackout in New York City, the main characters have an evening to kill, so they play a little one-upmanship game, seeing ...
