Identity (May Trigger)

My boyfriend was filling out something for his class where he had to have several people that knew him describe him in ten words. While I was writing my ten words for him, I was reminded once again of a recurring problem of mine.

I don't really know who I am or what I want. I've stopped going to college because I don't know what I want out of life. I never can entertain myself ...

What happens during therapy?

I've been thinking seriously lately about going to the doctors about my mental health, because I recently turned 20 years old and I still like to believe that I may be able to find at least some happiness in life (perhaps naively).

So what actually happens when you see a psychiatrist, and is it at all useful?

Difficulty looking in the mirror

Hi,

I have difficulty looking at myself in the mirror. Whenever I walk into the bathroom, I try not to look at the mirror. If I do, I feel bad. It's not that I don't recognize myself, because I do, but I certainly don't accept myself. Not sure if I don't like the way I look or don't like the way I feel. I sometimes think that because I don't like looking at myself that ...

I don't exist here *might trigger*

I exist in this little timeless bubble where I spend at least 90% of the day in different fantasy worlds with fantasy people, completely submerged in my own mental imagery far, far away from life. There are people in these places that I care for and I feel alive there. Then something happens to pop this little bubble and I find myself rapidly tumbling down to earth at such force it's overwhelming and I have ...

I need some insight (non - may trigger)

Hi everyone,

a while ago I introduced myself here on the board. To make it short:
My boyfriend suffers from BPD, we have a house together, been together for 3 years.

I need some insight from people who understand (I came to notice that that is pretty hard to find).
It's not my intention to trigger someone. So sorry in advance if anyone felt hurt, or triggered, ... by this.

A while ago we had ...

Two questions regarding meds

I wrote the following post on the Bipolar Disorder forum just a few minutes ago. I figured it is a good thing to post here too. I think it is important to know that medications can be useful, but I wish that more people would treat them as a temporary tool that they use until they can get on their feet.

I found that medications are a great tool, which I used for years during ...

Two important questions about medications

I found that medications are a great tool, which I used for years during my recovery process. I am truly thankful for that. I advocate good psychiatry. Unfortunately, I noticed that a lot of people automatically assume that bipolar disorder means that medications ARE necessary. This is NOT true. There are alternatives to medications that are effective and safe for many bipolar individuals, but I haven't found any that are easy. I am writing this ...

Where do you fit on the triarchic model of psychopathy?

Which of the following applies to you?

"Disinhibition entails proneness toward impulse-control problems, including lack of planfulness and foresight, impaired regulation of affect and urges, insistence on immediate gratification, and deficient behavioral restraint. Related concepts include externalizing behavior (Achenbach & Edelbrock, 1978; Krueger et al., 2002), disinhibitory psychopathology (Gorenstein & Newman, 1980; Sher & Trull, 1994), and low inhibitory control (Kochanska, Murray, & Coy, 1997). Where Does Asperger's Stand Now?

I know what the DSM means essentially. How much power does it have over health/social aspects in this country? Is it that Asperger's is no longer a "thing" is autism the only possible diagnosis..? What all is entailed in Asperger's no longer being in the DSM? What does it change?
