I do this a lot, though I'm not sure I'd call it reckless or impulsive, looks more like masochism to me. I tend to test myself and deliberately force in situations I fear. Can't really say why. To see how far I can go perhaps. I do love the feeling after completion of these tasks, conquering one's fears feels empowering.

Does it have to do with shedding the over-reliance on others' validation? ...I guess it could be a few things...

Risk-taking as a personality trait is associated with ASPD and BPD. Of course every person has their own combination of personality traits so there's no reason why people with NPD can't be risk-taking. It's just not defining for the classification.
