Your reaction to being diagnosed?

Postby whodafudge » Tue Nov 21, 2017 6:24 pm

What was your reaction one diagnosed? I haven't been diagnosed but I'm sure I have BPD with strong narcissistic traits. I'm going to find a psychotherapist soon, to help.

After realizing, I broke down in tears. I'm really scared of myself...and I feel so unhinged. But then I keep reading that true narcissists wouldn't be worried about their disorder. I mean, is this true?

My reaction was one of interest, as I was diagnosed with a narcissistic subtype of schizoid PD [apparently] - its not even in the manuals so I was surprised.
Now its totally irrelevant to me. An empty designation has no use beyond selecting a type of therapy.

Sorry to hear that whodafudge. Are you okay now? I think when you realize what it means it can be really overwhelming and confusing at first.
Don't worry, it definitely gets better.

I think I had the typical narcissistic reaction -- I got upset and told the doctor that he was a narcissist.

I sort of low key knew it all along (narcissistic). I didn't need any diagnostic. I can identify another narcissist and I can compare myself to that person and "yup, we're the same".

That doesn't sound like NPD, given that you can differentiate between them and you.

Most people knew I was narcissistic, but did not realize that I was full blown NPD since I am covert. Quiet honestly, it is an advantage in this real world. Just look at our president. The most important part is that you become aware of who you are, accept it, and work on self-improvement. Being NPD is not bad, nor is BPD. BPD is more treatable with DBT.

The fact that you are acknowledging it means you are in control and can tailor/control it. Use it to your advantage and help others through it. That is what I committed my life to do.
Diagnosed partially of each: NPD, BPD, Bipolar 2, OCPD, OCD
Psych Ward: 7 days ER: 2x No self-harm + In psychiatric treatment
