NPD Subtypes

Postby cezannea » Mon Nov 20, 2017 4:15 pm

I'm curious about the subtypes of NPD. From what I've read on this forum, there are multiple. Since I think I have some form of NPD, I want to know which one I have. Any links or descriptions are helpful. And since this is an NPD forum, what type of NPD do you have? What symptoms do you exhibit that classify you as this type?
I have NPD. Ask me to talk about myself and I'll happily oblige. INTJ and Enneagram Type 5.

Well, first, let's go over the criteria for NPD, shall we?

First, you need to meet the general criteria for a personality disorder. Then, you need to fit the criteria for NPD. Here is a link to that criteria in the DSM 5: http://www.psi.uba.ar/academica/carrera ... al/dsm.pdf

Now, the subtypes of NPD (Millon's subtypes) claims that there are five subtypes of the disorder. These subtypes are not recognized by the DSM or the ICD, but here they are:
Unprincipled narcissist: the unprincipled narcissist has antisocial features.
Amorous narcissist: the amorous narcissist includes histrionic features.
Elitist narcissist: the elitist narcissist is a variant of the 'pure pattern' of narcissism.
The normal narcissist: the normal narcissist lacks the traits of the other four.
Lastly, there is the compensatory narcissist. This narcissist has passive-aggressive behavior and avoidant features.

Other subtypes that are not in Millon's theory are:
Hedonistic narcissist: the hedonistic narcissist is the mix all of all the Millon's subtypes that have other PD features.
Malignant narcissist: the malignant narcissist has antisocial and paranoid features, and exhibits sadistic behavior.

I got all of this off of Wikipedia lol. Here's the link if you want better descriptions of the subtypes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissis ... y_disorder

I have not been diagnosed with NPD myself, but I have known for about a year that I have narcissistic traits. I really cannot fit myself into a subtype, but I do know that I also have antisocial and possibly schizoid traits, as well. I'm not going to share why I believe I have all these traits unless you want me too, considering it will take forever (at least forever for me) to type everything out.

I think I'm either a compensatory narc or a hedonistic one. Either way, thanks for the reply.

Keep in mind to not diagnose yourself, and that no one here is here to diagnose you. If you want an actual diagnosis, or just a professional opinion, obviously go to a professional. If you just want to hang around here because you feel as though you fit in and all that, that's completely fine.

I'm seeing a professional. I can't decide whether to keep the facade up or actually get her to diagnose me. Although I guess throwing NPD at her would be fun, I don't want that on my record.

There are two subtypes: covert or overt.

I find the rest of it pure bullsh#t, and simply explains NPD with traits from other PDs.

According to me and Alexander Lowen there are 5 types of NPD:

1. Phallic-narcissistic personality (mild form of NPD) - 2. Narcissistic character - 3. Borderline personality - 4. Psychopathic narcissist - 5. Paranoid narcissist (the worst form of NPD, high degree of insanity).

I think you can find a desription of those in the internet.

1-the highest empathy and the highest connection with the true self among the narcissists. Lowest connection to the false self.

2 is worse than 1;

3 is worse than 2;

4 is worse than 3;

5-the lowest empathy and the lowest connection with the true self. Highest connection to the false self.

I think I fit the narcissistic character description. Which one do you think you are, cezzanea? :D :D :D

Loosely this, in so far as I am aware there is no empirical evidence for any types of NPD beyond overt and covert.

Millon's subtypes are not types of NPD, but descriptions of how NPD commonly appears when mixed with other maladaptive traits intended primarily for clinical assistance.

My recollection of Lowen's work is that it was done in the mid 80s and bears little relation to modern conceptions of NPD. Akuma would know better than I.
