Far Fetched Proxy Case

Postby journeysea » Sat Oct 29, 2022 6:15 pm

I have a neighbor that is very secretive and doesn't want anyone to know what is going on. The neighbor/family that resides in the home has a special needs child, possibly diagnosed at a young age with autism and is currently much older, possibly late teens, and is non-verbal. There is a father and mother and the child.

The police and EMT are constantly at the house for apparent seizures. We heard about Munchausen by Proxy through a friend after hearing various things from some of the neighbors having a prior known mental health problem within the family. We have been trying to piece things together but have a reason to believe that the mother and / or father may be slowly inducing or exacerbating the child's condition through various means, possibly poisoning through medication, heavy metals, or something along those lines.

After researching Munchausen by Proxy it appears that the original diagnosis that explains the syndrome implies that the motive of the parent is for attention. We think that there may be a variation to this syndrome where the child does indeed have an illness or pre-existing condition but the parent induces / exacerbates the child's condition in order to 1) eventually rid themselves of the responsibility of taking care of the child and 2) frame schools, teachers, medical staff, and property owners win legal settlements by placing the blame of the worsening of the condition (or even death) onto the individual or group responsible for that environment.

This sounds far fetched but there is additional evidence to support that the family is currently inducing symptoms of the child to frame the property owner of the current home they are in for not properly abating any lead paint that may be within the home.

If anyone has any leads to any research or specialists that may be able to diagnose the mental disorder or reason for this behavior it would be appreciated so that we can further rule it out.

No-one here can give a diagnosis, and no-one is able to assert themselves as a professional here. But I would say that you as a member of the public can report what you have observed to authorities- whether that be police, or child abuse specific organisations, and you can likely do it largely anonymously if you wish, rather than trying to work it out yourself. As someone who's had to deal with some pretty dodgy neighbours, it could get nasty and difficult if you get caught up in it directly. If authorities are already regularly attending the property, they may already be keeping tabs on how often and why they're there, and what they've observed in the home. Regardless of what it's called, whatever the dynamics going on, it is clearly complex and there's potentially a child/vulnerable young person at risk. Please be careful.
