Psychology undergrad

Postby lucygrey » Sun Aug 15, 2010 12:53 am

I would love to make an introduction of myself.

First off my name is Lucy. I got my screen name from a well known poem that I love because of its darkness and sadness. ( i will post it at the bottom.) Ever since i was a little girl I have had people ask for my advise and I got to know the best secrets because I never told anyone else. All of this comes with a price because you can't tell anyone and so the secrets stay with you.

I started psych classes in college and just graduated with my bachelor's degree. I am not sure if I want to continue in this field so I am taking a break right now. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on certain jobs I could get with just a bachelors degree.?

Oh, I am 24 and married with a baby due Oct. 2nd. So I have a long time before I really have to decide anything and i would just like to get some experience before I jump into the deep end.

Hey,

You didn't mention which poem you were thinking of. I know of two songs with 'lucy' in the title, but you did mention 'poem'. My brother did a psychology degree and is now doing a PhD in that area. Perhaps that is what you should consider doing? There is much funding in psochology research, as far as I know. Also, if you ever want to be a psychiatrist in the long run, I believe that it'd take a few more years of study/training, even after your undergrad degree.

With just the degree, I imagine that you could do some counselling, but I'm not sure how many counselling jobs are out there. You could ask your lecturers for advice - i'm sure that they'd be willing to help you. You could also start looking in the jobs market itself to see what wualifications are needed for jobs in your area.

sorry I forgot to add the poem at the end. Its by william wordsworth

Title: Lucy Grey
Author: William Wordsworth

Oft I had heard of Lucy Grey,
And when I cross'd the Wild,
I chanc'd to see at break of day
The solitary Child.

No Mate, no comrade Lucy knew;
She dwelt on a wild Moor,
The sweetest Thing that ever grew
Beside a human door!

You yet may spy the Fawn at play,
The Hare upon the Green;
But the sweet face of Lucy Grey
Will never more be seen.

"To-night will be a stormy night,
You to the Town must go,
And take a lantern, Child, to light
Your Mother thro' the snow."

"That, Father! will I gladly do;
'Tis scarcely afternoon--
The Minster-clock has just struck two,
And yonder is the Moon."

At this the Father rais'd his hook
And snapp'd a #######1;
He plied his work, and Lucy took
The lantern in her hand.

Not blither is the mountain roe,
With many a wanton stroke
Her feet disperse, the powd'ry snow
That rises up like smoke.

The storm came on before its time,
She wander'd up and down,
And many a hill did Lucy climb
But never reach'd the Town.

The wretched Parents all that night
Went shouting far and wide;
But there was neither sound nor sight
To serve them for a guide.

At day-break on a hill they stood
That overlook'd the Moor;
And thence they saw the Bridge of Wood
A furlong from their door.

And now they homeward turn'd, and cry'd
"In Heaven we all shall meet!"
When in the snow the Mother spied
The print of Lucy's feet.

Then downward from the steep hill's edge
They track'd the footmarks small;
And through the broken hawthorn-hedge,
And by the long stone-wall;

And then an open field they cross'd,
The marks were still the same;
They track'd them on, nor ever lost,
And to the Bridge they came.

They follow'd from the snowy bank
The footmarks, one by one,
Into the middle of the plank,
And further there were none.

Yet some maintain that to this day
She is a living Child,
That you may see sweet Lucy Grey
Upon the lonesome Wild.

O'er rough and smooth she trips along,
And never looks behind;
And sings a solitary song
That whistles in the wind.

As for starting a career in psychology my school offers a few programs. I could be a ph.D if i want to teach. A psy D if I want to do clinical work. Or if I wanted to do therapy just a masters or above. I did my internship working with teenage girls and I loved it but it didn't even pay more than the job i already had.. As much as I loved it I had to let it go. Right now I am looking at a few jobs and seeking employment at a mental health facility just doing things like "babysitting" or referrals to outside resources in my community. Just thought I would see if anyone else had any other suggestions. I know I could do some drug and alcohol counseling but that would be all.
