Hello,

I am 40 and have suffered from hypochondria most of my life. In the last month or two it has almost become unbearable.

The symptoms are usually real. Mild chest pain, sore back, stomach aches etc. The mental prognosis is always life threatening.

I have gone through long stretches where the problems do not bother me, but lately (Middle age?) it has been fairly dismal.

Hopefully I can learn something here.

Hi,

Hav you actually gone to a doctor to address these physical issues?

I generally do go to the doctor to assess medical issues. I have blood tests in, and an appointment booked.

My problem is the anxiety everytime I have a pain and thinking it is terminal affects me very adversely. Monday the doctor's office calls to say she wants to see me with the results. (Which is normal regardless of good or bad), and between Monday and Friday, life is a total write off because I am a psychological mess.

There are distinct periods of calm in my hypochondria. But for me, it is like a big flare up.....and this one is one of the worst yet....almost to tears much of the time..(Not good for a middle aged man).

Less than perfect...for sure.

Okay, my next question is have you admitted to anyone that you are somewhat a hypochondriac? or do you just accept hat you have it and try to liv with it as best as you can? Maybe the next time you see your doctor you should discuss it with him/her.

Oh, yes, I am pretty open about it. Generally in joking form. To my wife, honest and up front. She just reassures me, tells me I am fine...which is good.

I expect to talk to my doctor this time and ask about dealing with it. Today is a better day so far.

Ok, cool. I get the sense that you are making progress and a sustained effort this time to make things 'right'. I have 'right' in apostrophes because it's debatable what's right and wrong anymore, as I age. I think that everything has a bit of both.

Progress is fleeting always. For a hypochondriac (Well, in my case), a fantastic day can end in a moment with an odd pain somewhere. Here is my present situation...as far as I can guess...

Last fall, diagnosed with high blood sugar, high blood pressure, fatty deposits on liver. Decided to get tons of exercise, cut out sugar. Eat better.

Dropped 45 pounds in 3 months. (From 225 to 180). Doctor happy, gives me the form for more blood work. Get busy, don't go.

Get into collision playing sports, hurt neck a little, but not major. Then, driving in traffic, turn neck quickly and all of a sudden, can barely move my neck for days.

Back starts get sorer and sorer. Finally have time to get blood tests. Get blood tests and Dr's office calls and says doctor wants to go over results.

Back sore is obviously some form of terminal cancer.

Well, judging from your last post, you certaimly do seem to be a bit 'hyochondriated' (if that's even a word.. .. :? ). Whenever I sense a pain somewhere, the only thought that goes through my head is how cool it will be to monitor how my body cures it. You could analyse every slight pain and take the negative path (as to it's cause), or you could just take the positive path that your body will heal it. I know that this means little to you, because this [hypochondria] is probably ingrained in you at this stage. I wouldn't worry too much though - You seem to be intelligent enough not to let it become detrimental to your life entirely, right?
