Scape Goat Child Abuse / Target Child Selection

Postby ScapeGoatChild » Thu Aug 24, 2017 6:42 pm

I have to say when I selected my user name of "ScapeGoatChild" I was surprised it was available. I am a 56 year old woman who was chosen by my narcissistic parents to be the Scape Goat of the family. Scape Goat Child Abuse or Target Child Selection is I believe; the most common form of child abuse because it is the easiest form of abuse to get away with. We have all heard the term "Problem Child" or "Middle Child Syndrome" - these are labels applied to the abused child to excuse and enable the abusers.
IF authorities are notified about a suspected case of child abuse/neglect involving a Scape Goat / Target Child what investigators will find is what appears to be a normal family. The parents are charming and appear to be normal loving parents keeping a normal family home. The siblings will be healthy, happy (SPOILED but we will get to that later) well adjusted children and then there is the PROBLEM CHILD. The black sheep who has some sort of problem. Case closed.
I hear they are making a film based on the book "A Child Called It" by Dave Pelzer. I hope this film brings awareness to the practice of Target Child Selection.
If anyone would like to engage with me in a discussion about their experience with this type of CHILD ABUSE I would greatly appreciate sharing memories, thoughts, feelings and advice.

Hi ScapeGoatChild, and welcome to the site (:

I'm usually in the abuse forums (and a few others) rather than here in member intros, but I saw your name and thought i'd pop by to say hello.
I was the scapegoat child in my FOO as well, and if you wander over to the abuse forums (if you'd like to of course), you'll be in good company - there are unfortunately a lot of us that experienced that from our 'families'.

I do wonder though if any of our siblings are actually healthy and well adjusted.. even if they seem to be during childhood, I look at my siblings and see that none of us emerged unscathed, even the golden child has a lot of problems (more than i do in some respects.. at least for those around him anyway ) :?

xx
Shine me a light up
and i'll run round the moon..

It happened to me. I just learned the term a few years ago but i always just assumed my mom hated me for some reason. She did everything for my sister though and never made her do anything. Even my moms own friends saw it and would make comments to me about it. I always found it embarrassing. And of course my own friends and boyfriends always saw it.

My mom would tell people she treated her kids the same but that was the most laughable thing out of her mouth.

Thank you Seabreezeblue, I am new to this forum and this is my first post. I will take the discussion to the "Abuse" section of this forum and we can continue the discussion there.
And as far as your question as to whether the siblings are well adjusted people in my experience they most certainly are not.
I will continue in the proper forum......see you there!
