Here it is step by step:

1. Just a bit below the psychforums logo in the top left hand corner it says "user control panel". Click on those words...

2. The new page comes up and under big heading that says "User Control Panel" in huge letters there is a bunch of tabs to the different controls. The first one says "Overview" then "profile" then "board preferences" etc. Click on the second tab from the left, the one that says "profile"

3. You will see the edit profile page comes up. There is a menu on the left hand side that says "edit profile" then "edit signature" then "edit avatar", click on the one that says "edit avatar".

4. then in the box that says "link off-site" paste in the web address for the image which you wish to use as an avatar, this web address has to be only for the image itself, not for the whole site that the image is on.

5. Click submit. Your avatar should now work.

Troubleshooting: if your avatar didn't appear, it's either because you need to resize it to being smaller, or that you linked to the whole website your image was on rather than just the link to only the image.

Check with your link to the image that the address links only to the image and not the whole site that the image is on, this can be done by right clicking on the image and selecting "copy image address" from the menu (hopefully non-mac users have this option too).

If the problem is a problem with size, you could try downloading the image to your computer and resizing it using some sort of image program and then re-uploading it to a image hosting site. Alternatively, I think you might be able to use google to re-size images because I know you can do that if you have used the image search function in google, there is an option there to display the image in a variety of different sizes.

Good luck!

Hi,
It still won't allow me to 'upload' a photo. has to be a link and of a certain size, or chosen from the psychforums avatars. Any advice?

We don't allow uploads of pictures here. :) You could upload to http://imgur.com And then use the link from there?

I can only find pictures on google images, to even when I click on one (1) it goes to photoshop elements, so I can't upload it from there. (2) there is no URL specifically for the pic anyway. Where do I find pics that have their own URL?

You need to save it on your computer and then upload it on a website like imgur.

Right click on image -> save image as. Choose location and when you have it on your computer, go to imgur, upload it and when it's done, you can obtain an URL for the uploaded image.

Thanks very much for this excellent explanation/instructions/....I will have to ask my computer guru about the imgur. I'm sure it's fine since everyone here uses it! But he says I should never download anything that I don't know about. Will check, then be back to the forum later!

If you copy the URL to an image. Then you can paste that into http://imgur.com Which is a website. So nothing is ever downloaded.

The only issue there is making sure the image is small enough. That can also be done online at somewhere like http://www.picresize.com/ [again, choose "From URL."]

Or let me know by private message which image you want to use. And I'll put it up at imgur and send back the avatar URL.

Thanks for this information, Ada, but I've decided it's too much trouble. I'm spending too much time as it is, now, trouble shooing various internet problems. Hours and hours. Really getting tired of it all. So, my avatar will either stay as-is, or I think I can delete it and have no avatar.
