How to post an avatar

Postby salted lipstick » Sun Apr 29, 2012 2:04 pm

We get a lot of questions about how to post an avatar from members here so I thought I'd post some instructions for those of you who need it.

Here it is step by step:

1. Just a bit below the psychforums logo in the top left hand corner it says "user control panel". Click on those words...

2. The new page comes up and under big heading that says "User Control Panel" in huge letters there is a bunch of tabs to the different controls. The first one says "Overview" then "profile" then "board preferences" etc. Click on the second tab from the left, the one that says "profile"

3. You will see the edit profile page comes up. There is a menu on the left hand side that says "edit profile" then "edit signature" then "edit avatar", click on the one that says "edit avatar".

4. then in the box that says "link off-site" paste in the web address for the image which you wish to use as an avatar, this web address has to be only for the image itself, not for the whole site that the image is on.

5. Click submit. Your avatar should now work.

Troubleshooting: if your avatar didn't appear, it's either because you need to resize it to being smaller, or that you linked to the whole website your image was on rather than just the link to only the image.

Check with your link to the image that the address links only to the image and not the whole site that the image is on, this can be done by right clicking on the image and selecting "copy image address" from the menu (hopefully non-mac users have this option too).

If the problem is a problem with size, you could try downloading the image to your computer and resizing it using some sort of image program and then re-uploading it to a image hosting site. Alternatively, I think you might be able to use google to re-size images because I know you can do that if you have used the image search function in google, there is an option there to display the image in a variety of different sizes.

Good luck!

Firstly, photos of yourself or another person you know are not permitted to be used as avatars here due to personal privacy concerns and as such, are against the forum rules...

Secondly, if you want to upload some other type of image from your computer to be your avatar you will need to upload it to an image hosting site first, as this site doesn't host images... Then all you need to do is link to it in the way I have stated in the above post. :)

Thanks for your question. :D It is good to clarify these things.

You need to upload your image to an image hosting site. It won't work to try and upload something from your computer straight to here.

Here's some ideas for image hosting sites if you need one:
ImageShack
photobucket
tinypic

Remember it is against the forum rules to post a picture of yourself or someone you know as your avatar. This is for privacy and safety reasons.

Tour pictures? I'm afraid it's against forum policy to post [or link to] any pictures which show you or people you know. We're keen to keep this a very anonymous board. So that it's safe to be honest about whatever's going on for us. :D
