Is being a 'hoarder' actually a genuine condition or is it more of a 'tendancy' or something?

My mums x was a massive hoarder.. but he'd hoard stuff that just pisses you off. Like having half a butchery next to your kitchen just filled with frozen cow limbs. Old antique furniture... not the interesting stuff though.. the really dull crappy stuff.

And cars.. he had loads of great cars but never did anything with them :@

Sometimes hoarding gets to the point where it's a mental illness, sometimes it doesn't.

Sometimes it has a theme...

Sometimes it's just THINGS...
I've seen Hoarders that have just ridiculous amounts of THINGS...

The part that makes you a hoarder is the anxiety about getting rid of these things.

For example... Me
I hoard books, mostly...
And have no intention of getting rid of those...
But I hoard clothes, blankets, pieces of paper, writing impliments, etc, too.
My house got SOOO cluttered...
I've reduced a lot of it to a single room and stored other things...
Like stuffed animals, dolls, other things I can't bear to part with...
Under the house.

It's weird, because I don't use the stuff, mostly...
I just can't LET IT GO...
Seriously, I hyperventilate and cry and it's awful...
I'm slowly trying to purge things, but I CAN'T!!!!!

NEED THINGS!!!!!!

You hoard books? Have you read the books? Do they have a central theme? (e.g. crime, romance, mystery, etc. . .)

If there is a central theme to the books, a general one, you could probably use them to create a very nice bookshelf to display in a study room or something. I mean, it's not going to get rid of the books... But it will make them become more aesthetically pleasing. This kinda applies to other things, too. If you're going to hoard things, make it organized hoarding.

Also, is it just me or do you think that if hoarders organized their stuff, they'd realize how much stuff they don't need?

I've read them all.
But I hoard papers too... like just loose sheets of paper... and pens... and yarn.. and art supplies.
I don't use anything except the books...
And they're in order.

Many hoarders don't hoard things like that.
Some hoard used paper plates, shards of glass, leftover food....
It doesn't always have significance.
I got lucky it's just books and things.

Order doesn't make it easier to get rid of.
I need it... it's all mine.

Yes, books...lot's of books! I am a history buff and have lots of hardcover "coffee table variety as well as serious collections, also books on mental health LOL, photography and every text book I ever had and many other subjects and novels as well.
I have a couple nice book cases but also boxes and boxes of books. Also papers, stacks of papers and I go through them and sort them with the intent to file them etc. but gives me too much anxiety trying to decide. Same with my photo collection (pre digital age) boxes of prints, negatives and Kodachrome slides as well as Ektachrome which I developed myself! Had a nifty darkroom in my basement (great place to do various ientertaining activities as a teenager).

See how many of you even know what the heck i'm referring to.

LOL stuff is good....and bad :(

I always wanted a darkroom, dude.
I love developing my own pictures.
I have a lot of super old, antique negative that I want to develop into pictures, and some super old pictures that were developed on metal that I need to transfer, but the chemicals are so expensive and the remodel to the room would be costly too.
Plus... it's not like I need more crap.

Thus, I am getting a digital SLR.
I'm excited...
I can photoshop develop all my pictures.

Yes digital is awesome and has many advantages. I just got my new Canon EOS T2i and took some on auto and now need to spend some time figuring out the gazzillion different settings. Got some sweet concert pictures right from the get go, but I do miss my Nikon FM and a real f-stop and shutter speed adjustment as well as the classic click and roll or the SLR mirror...awwwww

and nothing replaces being in a small room with the smell of hypo, photoflo and cannibus LOL .....
...add in a quickie with you photo class partner, trying to get the "final project" right....... yeah darkrooms are cool!
