Why can't you reply on venting forum

Postby causalset » Fri Nov 02, 2018 1:56 pm

To me, the whole point of venting is for other people to reply. So I wish it was possible to reply on venting forum just like it is everywhere else. Otherwise its just pointless.

I think in some cases it would just lead to someone getting really angry. I'm okay with just kind of shouting into the ether sometimes personally.

Yeah, "venting" may be considered more of a one-way street. The main purpose being that others listen (or not) while you just blow-off some stress.
Otherwise, replies would just lead into an escalating discussion. Choose an appropriate psychforums section for the discussion that you wish to have. :D

Well, for me, when I want to vent, the discussion is a GOOD thing. The typical reason why I get hurt is if, whoever hurt me, refuses to talk about it. In this case its better to at least talk to other people than nobody at all, What are the two possible outcomes of discussion? It is

a) People take my side and say the other person is a jerk. It would make me feel better.

b) People take the other person's side and explain to me why the other person said what he/she said. That would also make me feel better since I would realize that that person didn't simply hurt me out of the blue but had a reason to do it, and it would also give me ideas of what to do to avoid it in future.

So you see? Whichever way the discussion would go, it would be a good thing.

Now, I realize that not everyone is like me. But what happened recently is I made a post and the mod moved my post into a vent forum. Did I, myself, make it in a vent forum? No. So obviously, I didn't "choose" to make it one-sided vent, the mod made that choice for me.

The Venting forum is a 'Start only' venue:
venting-forum/topic40624.html

I have to agree that the other moderators made the best decision on this. If you need to discuss issues, most any other section would allow a constructive and helpful group discussion about it.

I would find it very difficult to respond to a "###$ ALL OF YOU" topic, let alone even want to click on it to see what it was all about.
There wasn't anything for me to respond to in that topic as your mind was already made up that we were "ALL A BUNCH OF ###$ LOSERS ANYWAYS". It belongs in the Venting forum all day long.

Post a topic elsewhere for a discussion. It might help to begin with a question instead of an insult next time if you want constructive feedback from others.
Best of luck to you. :D

And I DID post it on one of the "other sections" as you put it. The mod was the one that moved it to venting, remeber?

I DO want to discuss a specific topic. Namely: were the people at the SAS forum fair or not? As far as OP goes, I was simply using you guys as a punching bags to let out my anger. But, once I let out the anger, I do in fact want to discuss the above topic.

Using other forum members as a punching bag isn't a good idea. If I'd come across the OP before discussion had been underway you'd have seen the post locked and a pretty please to play nice.... other members aren't punching bags.

The general tone of the thread seemed more venting than anything else- also we strongly discourage trash-talking of other sites- those get shut down in a hurry, both out of consideration for the other site, also we don't allow linking to other forums, and we wish to avoid cross-site flame wars. Anything more than mentioning another forum site in passing, is quickly discouraged.

As for the Venting forum, yes they're one post only then locked. If a post elsewhere in the forum has no clear (at mod discretion) purpose it is liable to get put into Venting. Ventings are one-off, intense vents, generally.

For general venting, whinging (nothing wrong in that, I do plenty of whinging, if you can't whinge in PF, where can you whinge), thoughts, etc., with no defined question/issue being put forth, there's a couple options: you have the blogs, and/or a journal thread. The journal threads you ask a mod to start, and tell the mod you want replies or no replies. The Blog option, all posts are open to comments. Being that they're your own threads as long as they don't violate community standards, there's more leeway (as far as this mod's concerned) than in regular forum to go where you please with the direction.

Both options are moderated, posts and comments to both journal threads and blogs are always up for moderator approval before being made visible to other members.
