How do I give back to the community?

Postby bryce96 » Mon Jul 17, 2017 1:25 am

I've always dealt with mental illnesses, therefore I've developed a special compassion for fellow sufferers. I really want to help out, and advocate for the kind of advancement we need in the world (especially when it comes to these issues). I've done some charity before, but it was through a church and I am no longer religious.

Perhaps you could team up with something like United Way, if a religious organisation is not to your taste? Or check with them to get a list of charitable organisations that are partnered with them, and go from there.

Somewhat related. I attend 12-step meetings. They planted a seed in me decades ago that saved my life and changed my world.
The newcomers that come into these rooms need guidance and support in early recovery as I once did.
The old-timers that assisted me some 25 years ago are almost all but gone now and I am now one of those old-timers. A listening ear, a kind word and helpful advice.
It is said in these anonymous 12-step programs that "in order to keep it, you have to give it away". Being able to help others that came from where I came from gives me untold riches . Paying it forward is my reward.
Pass it on. :D

Another angle to consider is this: Pay attention to local government. Know the lower-tier officials in your town and how they stand on mental health issues regarding resources, laws and public opinion. Vote accordingly. Write to your city councilmen in regards to these issues if you feel it's necessary.

*mod edit* If we're not careful, the next one could be up there, in front of millions, denigrating those with mental illness.

Be wary of charities. Look into their records of efficacy and how they use their funds before you get involved.
