Will it not even show that my post has been posted until approved by an admin?

I'm afraid that's indeed how it works. This is used to weed out spam, you wouldn't believe how much we get (I just disapproved four). But also various mods work on various forums so depending on where you posted it might take a while longer to get your post approved.
