"Edited ∞ number of times"

I wanted to ask something here:

When you edit a post, does it always show how many times you've done so? Does that message only appear if you do it after a certain time interval?

I'm asking because I almost always notice a error with the post, after I've posted it, and so I edit my posts often.

I think the message shows if the edit is after a certain period of time. Though I have no idea what that time is. And, the window for silent edits may disappear if someone posts quickly after you, too.
