How long does it take for new member posts to be approved?

Postby whichway » Sun Oct 11, 2015 3:46 pm

I'd just like a general idea. So far for me it's been 2 days with no sign of approval. I understand that everyone are volunteers and there's a backlog.

Thanks :)

phpBB has permissions which would allow for creating a "Welcoming Team" group. Limited privileges to release posts from the moderator queue. It seems like that would be a useful division of labor, freeing up moderators to do more cranial activities, letting a handful of members be responsible just for reducing the occurrence of spam accounts.

It doesn't seem like it would be a can of worms if it were limited like that. And, new users could have a more positive experience (less delay). That's not a swipe at you guys. I know you have other things to do. That's why I'm saying a narrowly focused "team" might help.

Sometimes new posts take 2-3 days and they appear as unread, far down the list. They're not easily seen by other members.

I'm glad you liked that. I know phpBB 3.1 comes with a predefined group like that. It's not hard to create a group with just that single permission.

I can understand wanting to keep the administrative pool small to avoid the overhead of more voices. But, it seems like the welcoming team could be limited to their own interaction so their internal dialogue doesn't distract mods/admins.

It seems like a relatively brainless activity. What percentage of created accounts are clearly so on the first post? (How often are accounts created by a human with the intent of spamming after being seen as legitimate?). Seems like the procedure for when to remove a new account from review would be straight forward. If a custom report could be generated, that could summarize posts by users with fewer than some number of posts (for easy detection of a human registrant who pretended, if that happens much.).

That could also be a pool to draw moderators from. They'd have access to the MCP and be familiar with the tools (even if they couldn't execute anything). That's a large hurdle for someone, just to be comfortable with the tabs/functions.
