Difference between "sent" and "outbox."

Since I am new here, I am not quite sure what those two mean and how they differ. I noticed that each time I send a message, it goes to the outbox rather than the "sent" folder. Can anyone tell me what the difference is?

When your message is received by a person you're sending it to, it moves from your outbox to your sent folder.
