Venlafaxine and Quetiapine - now with added Mirtazipine

Postby Philup » Wed Dec 20, 2017 8:44 am

Hello all. I suffer from GAD and OCD. I have been on 150mg of venlafaxine for years. About 4 years ago I had 150mg of quetiapine (not modified release) presecribed which has now gone up to 300mg daily.

I have some 25s knocking about from previous dose alterations and am taking 375mg a day.

In addition I have now been prescirbed 30mg of mirtazipine a day. I am worried about serotoning syndrome.

I see the psychiatrist privately so this is not a concern which I can raise without forking out a load for another appointment. Sadly, it didn't occur to me during the appointment,

Quetiapine itself makes me sleepy the next day and has zapped any motivation. Ideally I would want off it but when I forget to take a dose I literally do not get any sleep.

If you were me would you skip the quetiapine to start taking mirtazipine instead, and will it get me to sleep?

I am a bit worried about taking all 3 together as well in case of accidental od of sedatives, 300mg of quetiapine and another sedative-type med, mirtazipine 30mg on top, seems a lot to me.

I know that no-one here is my psychiatrist but wondering if anyone else could share any experience with these three meds.

Thanks for reading.

You should discuss this with your primary physician, psychiatrist or pharmacist. I can't responsibly give you any medical or pharmaceutical advise on this forum and am not personally familiar with these medications. I'm sure that you have already Googled for information on them.
If you do adjust your prescriptions, call his office and state that you are doing so. If he feels that he needs to see you about this, the office will call back. When is your next appointment?
Best of luck to you. :D

I wouldn't advice stopping any of your current medications before consulting your doctor first. If you are not sure about crossover interactions and serotonin syndrome maybe you should just wait before starting mirtazapine before asking your doctor about your worries next time you see him. I'm currently on duloxetine and mirtazapine for the treatment of OCD,which my psych doc was not happy about because of the possibility of serotonin syndrome,he wanted !me to quit mirtazapine all along ,a gp wrongly prescribed me by misdiagnosing me with depression and anxiety, before even starting on duloxetine, but because my sleep ,as you, would literally stop I was not able to quit, but instead just halved my dose, and so far it's working ok (3 months on both medications ,6 on mirtazapine). Good luck and keep us updated x
