Postby boon » Mon Aug 27, 2007 1:49 am

Hello, i have panic disorder also agoraphobia, i no longer ride the c train buses, elevators fly or drive alone for a long distance or dive to another town with others also, i am a roofer and now am afraid of the second floor. 10 years ago i had post separation anxiety and it got out of hand, agoraphobia intensely , anxiety was terrible, i refused to take meds, i now am 39 and the doctor prescibes voloft, antipsychotic drug, 25 mg i am feeling better just having the drug in my possession, but am unsure about taking it, i am far from depressed, and a very outgoing guy around people, i read self help books, anyone try this drug before? did it work? the doc also gave me a number for group therapy

voloft?

Do you mean Zoloft?

If so it did wonders for me for 8 yrs.

The more you avoid doing the things that make you anxiety, the worse it will be for you. Baby steps are key, just getting out your door is a step, then you tell yourself ok I just got to make it down the street. Once you are there say to yourself. I just got to make it to the bus stop, I have the option of turning back, but I will at least go there and see how I feel.

I do that , and I'm out the door and at my destination. I"m not big on public transit either, it makes me anxious too, especially if I do not know the exact route....

If that's the case, see if someone will go with you once or twice so you can see what it is, and have someone there with you.

If you are on zoloft it isn't an anti-psychotic, it's a anti-depressant that helps with anxiety. You wouldnt' be perscribed an anti-psychotic for anxiety....

25mg isn't the theraputic dose for Zoloft (if this is what you were reffering too) it's actually 75mg. I've been to the top for this drug up to 150mg which is the max they will usually give someone.

Can you up your dose? How long have you been on this medication?

Meds are horrible usually at first because the side effects can be brutal, but once your body gets used to it, it can be really helpful. No meds can get rid of your anxiety or agoraphobia, but it does help with symptoms of both. Only you can do it my friend. Can you get a self-help book?

thanks for the encouragement, you are right, it is zoloft, but my doc prescribed 25 mg only once a day, i have not started the meds because i would rather go through cognative approach. i have "the anxiety & phobia handbook" 4th edition.

I have the 2nd edition of that book, I suggest using the exercises in it.

You may like to go med free, but it does help.
Remember it isn't a anti-psychotic, it is an anti-depressant, and that dose is extremely low...

Hang in there, have you used the book yet?

I have been taking 100 Mg of Zoloft for 8 weeks now, I still have Anxiety. I had very bad Anxiety about two years ago, and took 100 Mg, and it worked great. I weight about 220 lbs. Should I try raising the dosage to 125Mg?

Thanks!
