Hi, "44",
Wikipedia is your friend: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoloft

Like several antidepressants, Zoloft gets used for panic disorder (what gets inter-mingled a lot with agoraphobia).

How an antidepressant works is VERY individual. So your doc is starting you off there. If you're lucky, maybe it'll be one that has minimal side-effect *for you* -- and helps the symptoms.

If something like Zoloft helps, that's a lot better than relying a lot on the tranquilizers (Xanax, etc) -- which tend to be addictive (meaning that when you try to come off them you get the very anxiety that was bedeviling you to begin with.

Also, remember that it can take 1 or 2 or 3 weeks to really know how well an antidepressant will work for you. Meanwhile: try learning how to SLLLOOOOWWWW down your breathing. That's the best *natural* relaxer.

Let us know how you're doing!

I took Zoloft for about 8 yrs.. and it helped. The only reason why I came off of it was because it did stop working for me.

The side effects were not fun, but no matter how crappy you do feel stay on them, as it does go away.

zoloft is as good an antidepressant as any to try but its a pity the doc didnt also give you a supply of valium to help you for the 4 weeks or so before the zoloft starts working, assuming it will work for you

zoloft quit working after awhile........had to quit it after hurting knee and on meds for that.........I never repicked up the Zoloft. I do want to investigate other possible medication. Yes having an emergency supply of Xanax got me balanced when first prescribed for Zoloft. At that point when I went in to my doctor's office, I was not well in the least. Just pale and lost a lot of weight and fearful of every little cloud in the sky. Thunderstorms were sending me into panic attacks. Husband worked nights a lot....overnight and these Florida storms rolled in from the water and woke me up into a severe panic. I'm not as bad now but I still get jittery at the thought of overnight thunderstorms.

zoloft for panic disorder

Postby matewzin » Fri Mar 28, 2008 5:22 am

Normally, Zoloft is used to treat major depression that involves persistent low mood that lasts for a long time, and eventually already interfering with your daily functioning.Zoloft may or at times may not include some side effects, depending actually on the person under treatment. In normal situations, a person taking Zoloft may experience Insomnia, Nausea etc;

I took Zoloft for a week and stopped because it was making me too tired to work. I'm sure it was just too strong a dose but I have always been against taking pills because I am afraid of the side effects. Dahlia, what you just described is sort of what I'm going through right now. I am taking multi-vitams because I know I'm not eating right, I'm slowly regaining my strength and health but I have to sometimes force myself to eat. It's strange what this disorder will do to a person.
I just started my first day working at PetSmart though and I have to say a good remedy for me is being able to have good conversation with people. It keeps me out of my own mind. I just have to get over the initial getting in there which makes everyone nervous when first starting a job. But everyone was really nice and helpfull and it just kept me out of my head. I've been out of work for about two months. I recommend that anyone who has just been diagnosed with Panic Disorder or Anxiety Disorder to stay social. Keep yourself around your close friends and family who have an understanding heart and patient ear.
Also Yoga is a good way to train yourself on relaxing.
K stay strong, know that there are people praying for you.
