Do people with mental illness live about as long as people without mental illness, or is our life span shorter? I've had problems with suicidle feelings, so I wonder about that sometimes. Can antipsychotic medication potentially shorten one's life? Not that I'm planning on committing suicide. I've been much better the past few months. I just wonder.

James
Report that jerk that keeps getting on your post and prdicting the end of the world etc. He is harrassing you and I cant stand it.
I am on meds. I take three antidepressants. I have a very stubborn depression that breaks through every year. I have heard that we will have shorter lives. I think it is because these drugs are not good for our liver. Maybe they will come up with better meds in the future withless side effects. I dont think it is necessarily true. Although sometimes my depressions get so bad I hope I will have a shorter life.

I heard on leno a few nights ago that depressed people tend to have shorter life spans.
It makes sense because mentality controlls alot of heath.

that seems to make sense aurora in a way..but..
if you are physically healthy, strong, then that should increase your life span, i guess what they're saying is is that if you have no desire to eat healthy, exercise and that sort of thing, then you wont live very long, but this is not limited to people with mental illensses, many people are just plain lazy, i think there are too many factors in it...

True, though statisticaly are the depressed really the ones working out. I know there are some, because I'm one of them. Though the ilfestyle as to being healthy as opposed to unhealthy in those ways is a little diffrent from what I ment.
I was speaking of the power of the mind. When you think something enough it becomes a reality.

not true, i dont think...i dont think if you really wished yourself to die at an early age without killing yourself, yo ucoulnd't do it, if you truely wanted to die but couldn't kill youself, you would just ..die..out of nowhere, there has to be a cause, simply wishing yourself dead wont cause your body to break down, maybe emotionally but not physically

Depression weakens the immune system, so I guess if the depression was severe enough and lasted long enough, it could have a negative effect on one's health. I've also been told by a counselor/psychologist in the hospital that I was in, that anger can cause physical ailments. I had a link on the positive psychological and physiological effects of kindness, too, but I don't know where I've placed it. Has anyone else heard of that?
