Unethical Therapist?

Postby confused.... » Sat May 28, 2005 2:47 pm

I have been seeing the same therapist weekly for over a year. While it has been beneficial I feel as though I am ready to not go every week, I would like to go once a month or a couple of times a month. this is also a huge financial burden on me (I pay out of pocket, not through insurance, as he won't take my insurance...) When I communicated this to him he was completly defensive and told me that I should just ask my parents to give me money every month to help out. I can't help but feel that this was completly unethical of him, isn't he supposed to be supportive of my decisions or where I want my therapy to go? Also I am not suicidal or majorly depressed...therapy helps me deal with my stress and anxiety. And I am not on medication...so I guess I just would like some input as to whether or not I am not understanding something, or if it is time to start looking for a new therapist...Thanks!!

Some therapists are just out for themselves

Postby ROBinLA » Sat Jun 17, 2006 9:41 pm

I was incredibly naive myself and saw a therapist for almost 5 years believing she really only wanted what was best for me. Over that time I didn't solve the issues that I was dealing with...which had to do with procrastination and not writing things for contacts I had here out in LA. Now it is too late and the contacts are no longer there and I realize that all this time the therapist was just saying things to make me feel good...not getting to the bottom of the issue. What a waste of 5 years and lots of money.

Be wary of all therapists and psychiatrists. Doctors in general. Use them for very specific things and keep track of what you are seeing them fore. Otherwise they will use you and just have you come back forever and ever...that's how they make their money.

I agree that some therapists can become addictive, we all need someone to tell our troubles to but a therapist should do more than just sit there and listen
also you must stay in control of the relationship, remember that you pay the therapist, he doesnt pay you, so you must be the boss

my therapist pretty much refuses to talk about the things that actually bother me and instead tries to make me believe i have other problems than the ones i have and only agrees to talk about those problems that i do not have. some therapists shouldn't be therapists lol
