I spotted a new book today called "I hate myself and I want to die!". It's about the stories behind the 52 most depressing songs ever written. I didn't buy it but I thought some of you may be interested in taking a look next time you're in a book-store.

Truthfully i just glimpsed over this topic and something dawned on me!
Maybe the music you people are listening to is the root of our problem?

I also read one post that somebody stated they listened to classic rock like nirvana and metallica... Classic is Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath!

Maybe my observations are vague, But i see a chain here with the class of music you people are listening too! Music these days is HARSH
And not very uplifting! NOT saying i don't like most of it, But am saying i see myself changing heart as to what i do listen too! Maybe it's age?

Wow, an awful lot of metalheads here. I kinda like it, but come on, if you only listen to stuff like Dani Filth's screeching about "Born in a burial gown" over hellishly evil guitar riffs and gloomy gothic synths while you're suffering from depression, I don't know, but I doubt it will get you out of it.

Anyway, I like DRUM&BASS and JUNGLE (Pendulum, Andy C, Black Sun Empire, DJ Hype, ...), TRIBAL, GOA, PROG HOUSE, BREAKBEAT, TRIPHOP, HIPHOP (The Pharcyde, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Common, ...), REGGAE (Bob Marley, Lee Perry, Israel Vibration, Black Uhuru, ...), RAGGA DANCEHALL (Elephant Man, Sizzla, Mr. Vegas, Capleton, ...), REGGAETON (Daddy Yankee, Tego Calderón, Ivy Queen, Don Omár, Nicky Jam, ...), SURF ROCK (Dick Dale & His Deltones, The Ventures, The Surfaris, Beach Boys, ...), CLASSIC ROCK (Rolling Stones, Beatles, Van Morrison, The Who, ...), ACID ROCK (Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, ...), PROTO PUNK (Iggy & The Stooges, Velvet Underground, New York Dolls, ...), SEVENTIES PUNK ROCK (Sex Pistols, Ramones, Stiff Little Fingers, The Clash, The Rezillos, The Stranglers, ...), NEW PUNK ROCK (Nofx, New Bomb Turks, The Hives, Rancid, ...), lots of sorts of METAL (Iron Maiden, Slayer, Cradle Of Filth, Children of Bodom, Deicide, Emperor, ...), and some stuff that doesn't fit into any genre, like Amon Tobin, Mr. Scruff, Pepe Deluxe and others.

I seem to be interested in more than one genre, I guess

hey...

I like Hip Hop. Hip Hop is a way of life in my eyes. Sorry, I -LOVE- Hip Hop. I don't know what I'd do without it. I produce, think about it all day, and figure out ways for innovation to bring out the most of its culture and 'elements.'

So yeah, HIP HOP

My all time favourite "I'm angry and I hate the f*$@ing world" record is by the Jesus and Mary Chain and it's called "Never Understand".
If you can imagine the Ramones, amps cranked up to 11, playing in front of a 747 at take off you are about halfway to realising the incredible sound and fury of this record. :D

@Jaggar

First off...Dani Filth? Come on...Cradle of Filth couldn't make an emotional song if their lives depended on it...Personally I have a preference for sad music, and one genre of metal fits in there almost perfectly, Doom Metal. I kind of think you were to quick to judge actually. I mean why do you listen to music? I listen to it so I can feel better, or as a way to express my emotions. Recently something went wrong in my life, involving a girl, and in the end I was angry with myself, calling myself a failure and such. I started istening to some Death Metal, and some Grindcore, and after a while I felt better. And when I get depressed, which is quite often, I listen to doom, or post rock. And it gives me something to focus on other than the depression...sometimes I come out of it after listening some times I don't....but in the end music is an excellent emotional to me, and perhaps to some other people.

interesting thought, but I don't believe it applies to me.

I listen to EVERYTHING...ALMOST!! I listen to quite a wide variety of music. When I'm depressed, I'm depressed, and when I'm happy, I'm happy. And there isn't much that I can do about it. I pop in any random cd, and it usually doesn't effect how I feel, unless it's a song like "iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls or something. And sometimes "fur elise" by Beethoven makes me sad, and other times it just intrigues me and leaves me with and odd, but good feeling. I seriously like all kinds of music almost. I listen to America, Seals and Crofts, a little Nirvana, Lynard Skynard, Dashboard Confessional, Brad Paisley, Bach, The Beatles, Indie rock bands, and all sorts of other htings.

The only good emotional song they ever wrote was Funeral in Carpathia. Other than that the only other good song they have is All Hope in Eclipse...their releases keep getting worse and worse...especially nymphetamine.

[Edit] I forgot Her Ghost in the Fog, another great song that I used to listen to all the time.
