Can you help me?

Postby bland » Sun Jan 25, 2009 10:10 pm

I dropped out of school because I'm too self-conscious around people. My parents let me stay at home all day (yey for me) but they said that next week they're taking me to a psychiatrist.

I suppose SOMETHING needs to be done otherwise my future is a dark abyss - but why a psychiatrist out of all things?

I mean, well... I AM a high-school dropout. This can't be good, right? If I want to continue living at home, feeding off my parents, I probably shouldn't alert the mental health institution that I'm completely a-functional. Besides, I KNOW I'm not sick in any sort of way but I don't understand how psychiatry works.

In the beginning people felt sick? Then other people decided to investigate it...
And now whenever people feel sick, they know they're sick, and so they go to the doctor? That's confusing! :)

I know I'm not sick, and going to the doctor would be a waste of time and money... What could I possible benefit from going to him?

go to wikipedia.org
Look up the diagnosis criteria for anxiety disorders. Then tell your doctor you have those symptoms. Then get pills. And get high. And have fun. Problems solved.

I didn't complete either, though it was anxiety in the end.

Do you know why you've avoided school, being around people? Do you feel anxious ?

I recommend you consider returning to school. It may be rough and depressing at times, but it's only a few years. Plus there is definitely some value to what you are being taught, and, unless you find yourself completely disinterested in all aspects of it, sooner is infinitely better than latter so you don't have to do it when your mind becomes rigid.

This is coming from someone who dreads waking up on weekdays for the thought he has to see so many people who probably think he's a fool.

It should be possible for your psychiatrist to excuse you from attending classes. U.S. schools are required by law to offer homebound instruction for students who are unable to attend for medical or emotional reasons.

Also, stop telling yourself you aren't sick. The fact of the matter is that you have a mental problem that is preventing you from living normally. You want to have it fixed before it really starts affecting other aspects of your life. Trust me, I should know.

I thought Psychiatrists are there to help sick people become more functional not less functional...

Most psychs are only there as a link between the pharma industry and the normal people to sell lots & lots of pills, so Joe Sixpack CEO can get a jet, expensive vacation for whole family, millions if not billions in the bank and kick ass all the time. There are some psychs who are genuine and really do their best to help out, but these are very few and hard to find. Psychiatry is a pseudo-science and a lot of their claims are not scientifically proven nor disproved. There are countless cases of people committing suicide due to psych pills increasing suicidal thoughts (which was the case with me too while on Sipralexa) even when following prescription correctly. Truth is, there's no single cause of mental illnesses and I hardly believe that a small pill will fix most if not all your problems. A similar thing can be said about therapy, where depending on the problems and person, does not work on everyone.
