I thought I'd chime in on this thread since it's been bumped up with a response.

There is no such thing as mind reading. Contrary to what some think, our thoughts are non-linear most of the time. They start and stop, and sometimes an image (still or moving) interjects. There are sounds, abstracts of other thoughts, time shifting through memory, etc - all mixed together and happening in milliseconds. I don't think it would be easy to make sense of what someone is thinking even over a short period of time. It seems coherent to the thinker because he or she understands the quickly shifting information and all of its context.

Try this: For thirty minutes speak all your thoughts. I'm not talking about sitting and speaking on one subject. I mean go about your day and say all your thoughts. For instance, you may think to yourself, "I have to set the alarm for tomorrow". That's a thought. And it's probably wedged in between some other conversation in your head.

And so forth.

I don't think anyone could know every single thought in your mind during every second.
A good analogy would be the question of whether Grandma can hear a little bit or hear a lot.
Either way, hearing still exists even if only a little bit.
Clairvoyance is a form of mind reading.
Mental bonds between people do exist and it's more socially acceptable to say "we have a mental bond" than to say someone "can read my mind."
It's more socially acceptable to say "I'm clairvoyant" than to say "I can read people's minds."
I can say "I'm telepathic" and the only problem I run into is when people have telepathy mixed up with epilepsy when these two words have two separate definitions.
Not many people react with hostility when I complain about being telepathic.
They do react with aggressive hostility if you say someone can read your mind.
This brings me to another topic about abuse of people who have had mental breakdowns but this requires a new thread.

The lizard-brains that want to control Humanity are working on brainwave monitoring, I'm sure- well more than sure, I've seen WEF lectures on it, they're quite excited about it- but I got the distinct impression that it will be more in the form of being able to tell mental states- tired, distracted, angry, content- but not actual thoughts. And it'll be through something like a Fitbit, a wearable bit of tech that connects to a computer. Well, you'll have to point a gun at me to make me wear something on my wrist to read my mental state, and I'm pretty sure I'll let them know my mental state in precise detail just what they can do with their wristband, and where they can do it, and I'll likely suggest that they can probably do it with their mother, too.

But mind reading? Maybe someday in a DARPA wet dream, but not yet. Not that I know of. Ditto thought broadcasting. Far as I know, telepathy's never been proven via the scientific method, and mentalists do some impressive feats, but they're upfront that it's magic- psychology and deception.

Having said that, I've been connected enough with other individuals that we've singly, or mutually, sensed something up with the other person, even with a continent's worth of distance between us. Or anticipated someone's wishes, before they expressed them. Again, over long distance. But guessing something, or sensing it as a vague feeling, is still pretty darn far from mind-reading.
