Thumb Sucking

Postby shy_and_confused » Wed Dec 31, 2003 7:09 am

I would think on this site, this would not be too weird but...

I suck my thumb. I am a 35yr old male. I have been doing it my whole life. I don't do it in front of anyone and as far as I know, nobody knows about it except my parents. They have tried to stop it as I grew up. Even now and then when I am at the house for holiday, sometimes I am alone watching TV and my mother usually walks in to find me doing it. I stop as soon as I hear someone coming.

I am wondering, is this bizzare and unusual behavior, or is it just another one of those "comfort habits" ?

I do it because it relaxes me. However I am a 35 yr old single male. I don't do it around anyone else. Mostly in bed, on the sofa watching TV or sitting at the computer in my BR.

What is your opinion on this and do you think its something I should try to stop?

Anyone else here do it?

Thanks

You are just as normal as most people, whatever normal is! I am a 44 yr old woman who sucks her thumb. Recently I have had the courage to come clean about my habit and found to my surprise that I am not the only one. My best friend who happens to be a 27 yr old male has the same habit. He was so relieved to confide in me. YOU ARE HARMING NOBODY ,so continue to get all the comfort you want . Most people find it kinda cute.

Aaahhh you think that's abnormal? Pssh.....

I suck my big toe and kiss my girlfriend after. She doesn't mind, that's why we love each other so much.

I suck my thumb too and actually think of it as a real benefit. I mean, except for its social position (an unfortunate consequence of a combination of incorrect assumptions about its association with being immature and worse) where else can you find a behavior that combines being quiet, free, legal, convenient, without calories or drugs, instantly calming, enabling one to fall asleep under a variety of conditions and psychological pressures, aids concentration and more? Where? :)

@shy_and_confused - If you feel it keeps you relaxed and doesn't harm your health, then there isn't anything bad about. There may be a social stigma, but it honestly sounds like a more like a habit than anything bizarre.

A lot of people do this into adulthood, more than you probably realise, showing that it isn't anything abnormal. @Infinite - happy that you've got someone who accepts all of you!
