Nursing career possible w/ psychiatric backround?

I want to be a nurse but I've been told I might not be able to take the exam due to my psychiatric background. I had an overdose in the past and that could be a reason to prevent me from being a nurse. Does anybody know the rules regarding this? Is there a certain period of time do I have to wait?
