brother diagnosed with Schizoaffective Disorder

Postby guest » Sun Apr 16, 2006 10:13 pm

my brother in law was diagnosed with Schizoaffective Disorder and his family cant deal with him anymore. He is over the age of 18. What can they do with him? He lives in Macon, Ga. Where are the supported housing programs for this disorder or day programs?

What do you mean they can't deal with him? Can he not function on his own?

I have Schiz.A and find that many people can not deal with me. But I am perfectly able of functioning and do not need a group home or day program.

Can he be the same?

Anyway, day programs and "group homes" differ in each state, sometimes in each county. If you believe your brother in law is not able to function on his own, you may be able to contact a local mental health facility and see what may be best in your are. As well, his insurance company can give out information and places on what they will cover.

And remember (if he has one) talk to his doctor before making any decisions (such as commitment and force). And also, he has rights. He may not want or need group homes or programs. There can be other ways that he may want instead of such, that can help.

i really dont know if he could function on his own given that he could find some real friends not to get him into bad situations. I believe its because he has a lack of companionship that he does not function properly. I dont think his parents or any other family member can accompany for a buddy. Someone that is on his level and maybe could understand him? I myself have a family and three kids and have little or not time at all and dont want my kids to be in any danger. He spouts off harsh things, has hurt animals, drove recklessly, blood drinking, etc. He goes off the charts when he has an episode. But my personal opinion is that if he found a lasting relationship rather a girlfriend or a real buddy that maybe with taking his medicines that he wouldnt have an episode. He has always had a sort of mental retardness (slow thinking, slow understanding) before he was diagnosed with Schizoaffective Disorder.
