Tourette Syndrome is a tic disorder in which a person experiences very difficult to control or uncontrollable motor and vocal tics. Tics are differant for differant people but some common ones are eye blinking, throut clearing, and shaking. Some tics are simple like blinking others complex like punching the air. Coprolalia which is when you yell out obscenitys like curse words is another type of tic. This is rare and very much stigmatized with Tourette Syndrome. But in fact only 15% experience it. Once when I told a friend I had T.S. they responded by saying people Tourette Syndrome curse a lot which is not always true. Another type of tic is Echolalia when you repeat words you've heard. And finally the last type is palilalia when you repeat yourself. People with tourette's often experience several tics a day usually in bouts. Tourette Syndrome is always onset before age 18. I usually begens before age 7 between ages 3-10 and often symptoms improve or go away completely as the child gets older. OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) among kids with Tourette Syndrome. As well as ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder) and insomnia. Boys are much more likly to have Tourette Syndrome then girls. It can be inherited and a parent with TS has a 50% chance of passing it on their children. It is treatable through thearpy and most people with Tourette Syndrome aren't impaired to the point where they need medication. Tourette Syndrome does not affect your IQ however some children with T.S. may have academic difficultys.
If you'd like I'd love to talk to you daughter as well. I am 14 and have Tourette Syndrome as well as OCD. You may want to get your child the book Quit it by Marcia Byalick. I read a year ago, it is a wonderful chapter book about a girl with T.S. You way also want to look into the book A Test Of Will by Diane Shader Smith about a Teenage boy with T.S.
