hello Catherine- you know, school's started recently, and I'm wondering are you going to a school that accommodates your learning disorder?
Or are you suffering because they don't teach in a way you can learn easily?

If your going to a public school, I can imagine it being hard... they tend to teach a lot by speaking. Hope it's not too much of a burden for you...

I graduated high school in 2007. They accomadated to my learning disability sometimes and they put me in non special education classes which made it really difficult for me. So i learned NOTHING in history and math. I might start an online class in distance learning college i dont know yet. But im not going to school right now.

My aunt is always forcing me to call her and the problem is my LD is audio processing difficulty and shes like you can write down what i say but thats the problem, as you talk i cant write down. thats why i had teachers write down for me. and i understand much easier when its writen down but she doesnt get it.

Thank you for introducing yourself, Catherine. That's a beautiful name. I have an auditory processing learning disorder too. It's actually kind of a relief to see that I'm not alone, but I am sorry that we are struggling because of it. Like you, I understand things better when they are written down or drawn. But when I'm reading a book, it's a different story. I have trouble reading, especially concentrating on the text for extended periods of time. I miss some of what is said in class, sometimes without realizing it. I was at a competitive four year college, but after a depressive episode during which I couldn't get out of bed and go to class, I failed out. I am now at a two year college. But I'm not giving up. I hope to be transferring to another college after this year. The professors that I have this semester happen to talk slowly, which definitely helps. My hearing is excellent, but when someone is talking softly, but still audibly, I don't hear the words as well as if they're talking louder. I'm not sure if that has to do with the disability too, or if it's normal.

Hi im catherine. i have a specific learning disability. Its audio processing difficulty.

My name is Catharine..I have a similar learning prob--I hate the word *disability*. My verbal recall is pretty bad..I understand just about everything I read..but cant recall what I read
Have u looked into alternative medicine? Neurofeedback does wonders for neuro probs. Lots of people who dont have *learning disabilities* are visually oriented...you're not alone :)

Hi, I'm currently trying to get APD diagnosed.
I know exactly what you mean by not getting a lot when someone talks.
Sometimes my brain just shuts off and I can hear the words but they have no meaning.

I've learned adaptive methods by myself that have allowed me to function pretty much
normally but I do struggle in rooms that have any sort of background noise while trying
to listen.
I taught myself to partial lip read (really helps visually if the words don't make sense)
and I got used to filling in the blanks or making up excuses "I'm sorry, I didn't catch that,
could you repeat that?"
Even though repeating it doesn't usually work, -rephrasing- it does.
I don't know what it is about rephrasing that works, but it really helps...
I dislike phones and I tend to take things too literally and having trouble with inflections.
There is nothing wrong with my hearing at all! It's actually above average...
Recently I discovered subtitles for TV and found out I was missing half of the story.
It's become a much more enjoyable experience now.

I think there are some methods that they can use to help you cope with it,
such as lip reading classes and a hearing aid to filter out the background noise ...
those subtitles I mentioned, and there should be other things as well.
I haven't actually gotten into the office yet so I only know what I've been reading...
Some universities have special programs such as someone taking down notes from written
dictation for you.
Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses, it's our ability to adapt that is important!
