kleptomania the better choice?

Postby henrietta » Fri Sep 11, 2009 9:11 pm

kleptomania is something i have problems with. i am compelled to steal, yet i feel this is a much better addiction than things such as drug/alcohol. if one has an addictive personality does it make sense to indulge yourself in the less self-destructive addictions in order to keep your mind off of the more destructive ones? of course i know the ultimate is to have no addictions, but if one is in the beginnings of correcting oneself can turning a worst addiction to a less harmful one be a good thing?

Hi,

You're thinking is very logical here, and I applaud you for that. The best way to stave off the desctructive addiction is of course to admit that you have it [the addiction] and then to seek help. However, with logical thinking, you'd see that you can nullify an addiction by adopting another one. That's what you're suggesting here, right? It's the only way that I've managed to cope with my bulimia, to be honest. What do you plan to replace yours with? - Stealing?! No, become addicted in something more productive, such as college/school work.

well i pretty much have alcoholism and kleptomania. i was thinking that if got into klepto even more i could get out of alcoholism and stay out of drug abuse and keep my smoking cigs/cigars down to about twice per week (like it is now).

You would do better to find a differnt addiction other than klepto, as you WILL eventually get caught. The odds that you will never get caught are just too high for you to take such a silly rish as to embrace stealing. You can move from one addiction to another all you want, but don't let the move be to stealing-ville. The time devoted to your addiction can be channeled into something positive.

Great, do that then. Do you write already, perhaps?

i do write. im a creative writing major in college atm. however i still don't write as much as i like too. would love to buckle down and write a novel, or a series of short stories. right now i right short stories but they are really short, i would love to start making longer work. so if i could just write instead of indulge in something destructive it would be great.

I have tried to write short stories too (a few hundred pages long) but I have only managed to write opening chapters. It's hard to spend more time on them, even though I have ideas for the entire story in my head. I did write a children's story one entitled 'The Cruel King', but it was only a few thousand words long, and the publisher that I sent it to was having a strike at the time! That scared me and I never sent it to any other publisher.

a few hundred pages isn't a short story. a short story is like a couple pages to like maybe 60. anything above that is more a novella, even 60 could be a novella. and a couple hundred pages is a long novel lol. jeez uve wrote a lot.

Holy crap - DId I write a few hundred pages long? I did not mean that and habe no idea why I said that. What I meant was that they're just a few pages long. I really don't know where that 'hundred' came from - My apologies. I have written many poems though (50+), and around 95% of these are love poems.
