Anyone know about car air conditioners?

This may be random, but I'm a broke college student and needing to know what to expect. I have a 04 mitsubishi lancer ES. About a month and a half ago the ac suddenly stopped working. Then it would work most of the time, then only sometimes, until this week it would only work in the morning or for the first ten minutes of my commute then stop. Some days not at all. This week it has worked most of the time, but crapped out again on me today. When it does work it will cycle between cold, kinda cold, cold, kinda cold then not cold at all and stay that way. My bf says it sounds like it needs to be recharged, does this sound correct? Could there be a blockage as well? Any predictions/tips/opinions would be appreciated!

Has he or anyone else taken a look at it to rule out a fan or AC compressor problem or if the fuse needs replaced?
