So I recently added two birds to the flock. Both budgies. I used to think that both Petco and PetSmart were the exact same company in terms of how they treated their animals and their employees, but not, PetSmart, at least between my Petco and my PetSmart (Petco is much closer) is night and day. Petco, there's like, two employees in the whole store at any given time, despite the fact that it's much bigger than my local PetSmart. I know this because I casually asked a couple of the employees between a few visits how they liked working there, and that's what they all told me. They run around like chicken's with their heads cut off (for lack of a better expression) the whole day. I asked the people at PetSmart, the first ever time I went, last week, and they said the pay sucks, but they like working there. They were all students and it was a part time job.
Fast forward to Petco having literally no pets in their store other than a lone ferret (who was adorable, but they don't mix well with birds), I called PetSmart, which was, like, a two hour drive, one way, and I asked, "do you have any birds?" and they did. Long story short, I got two more budgies, and they're doing very well with my flock.
The biggest difference I noticed, and it's a MAJOR difference, is that PetSmart does NOT clip the wings of their birds. Every bird I got from Petco had clips wings and couldn't fly. That's psychological torture to birds. That's their only means of defense, flying away from danger. They don't have teeth, budgies have the weakest bites out of the entire parrot family, and the budgie I bought from Petco had her wings clipped, and was riddled with anxiety. These two that I got were flying around the birds' room as soon as I brought them in, and it only took a day for them to feel, or at least act comfortable. They're so full of life and energy, and that's what none of my birds had when they couldn't fly. Those birds now are full of that life and that energy.
