A piece of multi-coloured cloth can make a man's entrails fall to floor and make entire nations quiver in fear.
It can strike fear in the hearts of armies, invoke hatred among society, a be symbol of all damnation.
And we've been using flags for millennia yet no one ever considered the total amount of obliteration, hatred and annihilation they have caused.
Here in the US, in the months following 9-11, everyone became an armchair patriot. People started buying "car flags"-- US flags one could attach to their car so they could show everyone what a great big big bloated American they were. They were cheaply made and had a tendency to break off. People would buy numerous replacements every time this happened. As a result, it wasn't uncommon to see dirty, tattered American flags all along the sides of roads, clogging up storm drains, even hanging from bushes or trees along the road. I don't recall ever seeing anyone cleaning them up.
