college and schizophrenia

Postby depressedboywithschizo » Wed May 04, 2005 7:18 pm

I just finished my second semester of college. i was taking 4 classes (all computer related) and ended up failing 2 of them. when i told my parents, my mom yelled at me and my father put me down by calling me "worthless". i feel like they don't even understand how hard it is to go to college with schizophrenia. mabey i should end my life because i'm so "worthless" to them. and if i'm worthless to them, then what am i to the rest of the world? i can't help but feel like i'll never be able to fit in to the real world. if anyone can give me something to motivate me and help me deal with my illness, please respond to this posting as soon as you can.

I'm sorry you received such rough treatment from your parents. It doesn't sound like they have a very accurate idea of what schizophrenia is like. I have two grown kids with it. They are 21 & 23 yrs old. I know that neither of them would be able to enter college at this point of their lives...maybe down the road but not now.

I applaud your efforts at sticking it out...and you still passed two of the classes!! Regardless of passing or failing you are NOT worthless! Your parents shouldn't be saying things like that to you and I wouldn't pay what they say much attention. No one in this world is worthless. All of us have our strengths and weaknesses. And SZ is not a fun thing to have, it gives you a disadvantage. Maybe a few years down the road you might want to give college another try. But, if it's not working out now I would perhaps suggest just getting a job for now.

Please try and not take to heart wht your parents said to you. I know that their words hurt you...but I would say to disregard them as much as possible.

I hope things get better for you.

thank you for your comforting words. you're right I did still pass two classes so it wasn't a total loss. i should point that out to my parents. and i've already told them that i'm going to make up the classes by retaking them (one in fall and one in spring). But mabey i should look in to a job for the summer. i can really feel like you can understand sz because of your reply. again thank you for the comforting words. i hope they will help me get through this difficult time in my life.

It's hard to believe that this was written five years ago. When I seen what depressed boy had written, I got a little excited, because I went through the exact same thing and it feels comforting to know that I'm not alone. Unfortunately, it looks like depressed boy is no longer a member, which stinks. I think he would have been a cool person to talk to.
If there is such a thing as normalcy, when will I experience it?
