Can anybody suggest any decent books?

Postby TheImpossible » Wed Nov 03, 2010 3:36 pm

I've been through book store after book store, but since there are so many books I just can't find a single title I'm interested in.

My favourite genre is fantasy or supernatural.
With a splash of adventure, horror and romance and so on.

I do like other genres too, just please don't suggest outright horror.

I do enjoy vampire novels, but quite frankly after Twilight there seems to be a mountain of books all depicting the same story with different names and circumstances (sans sparkles).
I'd like to read a book where vampires are not angsty, super-powered hot emo people that drink blood. Something more of an animal that doesn't regret killing to live, but isn't necessarily evil is what springs to mind when you think: Vampire.

Examples of books I've enjoyed (whether in my childhood or recently) are:
1) Terry Pratchet Novels
2) Odd Thomas (and sequels)
3) The Black Magician trilogy
4) Sabriel, Liriel, Abhorsen
5) Books by Darren Shan
6) Harry Potter (but I've gone off that a bit)
7) A Series of Unfortunate Events
8) The Inheritance Cycle (Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr)
9) Imperial Spy
10) His Dark Materials Trilogy
11) Black Beauty
12) Ballet Shoes

From what I read of it, Canterbury tales was quite good to, and Shakespeare's not half-bad.

There's also plenty more titles that I can't remember just now.

So any suggestions?
I'm open to genres I've never tried before too.
Before we talk about me, Doc, how about you try fixing all the "normal" people first?
I think they need it more.

I just finished Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K Dick. It's good but I think they improved the story with Blade Runner.

Go for something a little off collar for a change.
The Darwin Awards: Countdown To Extinction

It will make you feel quite intelligent after reading it but wonder how some can be so stupid.

I could never stand PK Dick.

The OP likes fantasy. I'm not into that much. But one fantasy writer I really like is Tim Powers.

The book Beautiful Lies by Lisa Unger is good, so is the book called Lucky, by Alice Sebold.

Oh and "What-the_Dickens" is also a good book. So is "50 fairy Stories".

Hey,

You seem to like similar books to me... It's taken me ages to find the right type of fantasy book to get into - right now I'm reading clive barker. He does fantasy/horror stuff - it's very easy going horror though, nothing too scary (its harry potter + lemony snickett style). I just read Abarat 1 and 2 - awesome. I'm about to read "Weaveworld" and "The Thief of Always" by him too.

A lot of his stuff varies though - he writes a lot of cheesy horror from the 80's - ie. nightbreed, and hellraiser. Just read a few reviews of different books to see if any appeal to you.
